| Remarks | Slides must be labeled with the patient’s name. Spread the brushed material onto a pre-labeled slide in one or two smooth strokes. Do not smear over the sample after it is has been applied to the slide since this will break apart the cells. Immediately immerse the slide in a red-top polypropylene tube containing 95% alcohol (supplied by Cytology). The slide must remain immersed in the alcohol until received by cytology. After placing the slide in alcohol, it is desirable to rinse the brush, or cut it off and place it in a tube of “CytoRich Red” solution (containing 50% alcohol and trace formalin, supplied by Cytology). If scheduled in advance, an immediate intra-procedural diagnostic evaluation by a cytopathologist may be able to be performed. | |

| Notes | All specimens must have two forms of patient identification on them and be accompanied by a Cytology Requisition that includes the patient name, medical record number, source of specimen and the submitting physician’s name. Slides must be labeled with the patient’s name and medical record number (if available) using a pencil. An adequate clinical history including pertinent lab/x-ray findings is essential. Missing information may result in a delay of the pathology report. Supplies listed below are available from the General Stores or the Cytology Laboratory. Submit all specimens including night and weekend specimens to Central Processing. | |
