In hematologic cancers, chromosome analysis, Fluorescence In Situ Hybridization (FISH), or a combination of both may be used for confirmation or exclusion of a particular diagnosis in new patient samples. For patients with a previous diagnosis, results from chromosome analysis and/or FISH may be used to signal remission or relapse as well.
Both chromosome analysis and FISH may be performed on fresh samples of bone marrow, leukemic blood, lymph node, and solid tumor. In addition, FISH may be performed on touch preparations, blood/bone marrow smears, and paraffin-embedded sections (thick and thin). The list below contains the FISH tests available in Cytogenetics that also have PCR-based assays that may be run in parallel (this testing is run by the Molecular Oncology lab). There are also many more FISH tests that are available (see FISH Probe Catalog).
